    Online Data Reduction for the Belle II Experiment using DATCON

    The new Belle II experiment at the asymmetric e+ee^+ e^- accelerator SuperKEKB at KEK in Japan is designed to deliver a peak luminosity of 8×1035cm2s18\times10^{35}\text{cm}^{-2}\text{s}^{-1}. To perform high-precision track reconstruction, e.g. for measurements of time-dependent CP-violating decays and secondary vertices, the Belle II detector is equipped with a highly segmented pixel detector (PXD). The high instantaneous luminosity and short bunch crossing times result in a large stream of data in the PXD, which needs to be significantly reduced for offline storage. The data reduction is performed using an FPGA-based Data Acquisition Tracking and Concentrator Online Node (DATCON), which uses information from the Belle II silicon strip vertex detector (SVD) surrounding the PXD to carry out online track reconstruction, extrapolation to the PXD, and Region of Interest (ROI) determination on the PXD. The data stream is reduced by a factor of ten with an ROI finding efficiency of >90% for PXD hits inside the ROI down to 50 MeV in pTp_\text{T} of the stable particles. We will present the current status of the implementation of the track reconstruction using Hough transformations, and the results obtained for simulated \Upsilon(4S) BBˉ\rightarrow \, B\bar{B} events

    Understanding Chinese business ethics : a study on perception of South African medical device companies

    South African citizens do not have a positive perception of Chinese companies. The perception of Chinese business ethics in South Africa’s industries are unknown and studies regarding this topic are absent in the literature. Good business ethics lead to an increase in trade between companies however, good business ethics are not essential for trade to happen. There is an increase in trade between the South African medical device industry and Chinese businesses; yet the perception of Chinese business ethics by this industry is unknown. This qualitative study explores the perception South African medical device companies have of Chinese business ethics. Data was collected through fourteen in-depth, semi-structured interviews with owners, executives and senior managers of South African medical device companies. This study found that the medical device industry of South Africa has its own ethical lens used to assess business ethics. The industry’s lens is predominantly influenced by Western standards, practices and ethics. This study found that the medical device industry has a negative perception of Chinese business ethics. The negative perception is influenced by many factors, in particular Chinese medical device product attributes and adherence to Western standards. This research contributes to the literature by exploring the perception of Chinese business ethics in a particular industry of South Africa, this being the medical device industry of South Africa.     LIFE-SHARE Project: Developing a Digitisation Strategy Toolkit

    This poster will outline the Digitisation Strategy Toolkit created as part of the LIFE-SHARE project. The toolkit is based on the lifecycle model created by the LIFE project and explores the creation, acquisition, ingest, preservation (bit-stream and content) and access requirements for a digitisation strategy. This covers the policies and infrastructure required in libraries to establish successful practices. The toolkit also provides both internal and external resources to support the service. This poster will illustrate how the toolkit works effectively to support digitisation with examples from three case studies at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York

    This paper discusses the rationale for patenting inventions that enable the HIF power plant and the status of the prosecution of these patents. Our rationale for starting a business to pursue HIF power was its “suspended animation” despite being held since its 1976 debut to face “no showstoppers” and considered to be “the conservative approach to power production.” In turn, the rationale for patenting the unique features in our HIF approach is that intellectual property (IP) is essential to attract investors to a business endeavor that could readily be taken over by large competitors..

    Impairment of Procedural Learning and Motor Intracortical Inhibition in Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Patients

    AbstractBackgroundCognitive difficulties are the most common neurological complications in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patients. Recent animal models proposed increased GABA-mediated inhibition as one underlying mechanism directly affecting the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) and learning. In most adult NF1 patients, apparent cognitive and attentional deficits, tumors affecting the nervous system and other confounding factors for neuroscientific studies are difficult to control for. Here we used a highly specific group of adult NF1 patients without cognitive or nervous system impairments. Such selected NF1 patients allowed us to address the following open questions: Is the learning process of acquiring a challenging motor skill impaired in NF1 patients? And is such an impairment in relation to differences in intracortical inhibition?MethodsWe used an established non-invasive, double-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (dp-TMS) paradigm to assess practice-related modulation of intracortical inhibition, possibly mediated by gamma-minobutyric acid (GABA)ergic-neurotransmission. This was done during an extended learning paradigm in a group of NF1 patients without any neuropsychological deficits, functioning normally in daily life and compared them to healthy age-matched controls.FindingsNF1 patients experienced substantial decline in motor skill acquisition (F=9.2, p=0.008) over five-consecutives training days mediated through a selective reduction in the early acquisition (online) and the consolidation (offline) phase. Furthermore, there was a consistent decrease in task-related intracortical inhibition as a function of the magnitude of learning (T=2.8, p=0.014), especially evident after the early acquisition phase.InterpretationsCollectively, the present results provide evidence that learning of a motor skill is impaired even in clinically intact NF1 patients based, at least partially, on a GABAergic-cortical dysfunctioning as suggested in previous animal work

    Intraoperative Beat-to-Beat Pulse Transit Time (PTT) Monitoring via Non-Invasive Piezoelectric/Piezocapacitive Peripheral Sensors Can Predict Changes in Invasively Acquired Blood Pressure in High-Risk Surgical Patients

    Background: Non-invasive tracking of beat-to-beat pulse transit time (PTT) via piezoelectric/piezocapacitive sensors (PES/PCS) may expand perioperative hemodynamic monitoring. This study evaluated the ability for PTT via PES/PCS to correlate with systolic, diastolic, and mean invasive blood pressure (SBPIBP, DBPIBP, and MAPIBP, respectively) and to detect SBPIBP fluctuations. Methods: PES/PCS and IBP measurements were performed in 20 patients undergoing abdominal, urological, and cardiac surgery. A Pearson’s correlation analysis (r) between 1/PTT and IBP was performed. The predictive ability of 1/PTT with changes in SBPIBP was determined by area under the curve (reported as AUC, sensitivity, specificity). Results: Significant correlations between 1/PTT and SBPIBP were found for PES (r = 0.64) and PCS (r = 0.55) (p < 0.01), as well as MAPIBP/DBPIBP for PES (r = 0.6/0.55) and PCS (r = 0.5/0.45) (p < 0.05). A 7% decrease in 1/PTTPES predicted a 30% SBPIBP decrease (0.82, 0.76, 0.76), while a 5.6% increase predicted a 30% SBPIBP increase (0.75, 0.7, 0.68). A 6.6% decrease in 1/PTTPCS detected a 30% SBPIBP decrease (0.81, 0.72, 0.8), while a 4.8% 1/PTTPCS increase detected a 30% SBPIBP increase (0.73, 0.64, 0.68). Conclusions: Non-invasive beat-to-beat PTT via PES/PCS demonstrated significant correlations with IBP and detected significant changes in SBPIBP.     Exome sequencing of 20,791 cases of type 2 diabetes and 24,440 controls

    Protein-coding genetic variants that strongly affect disease risk can yield relevant clues to disease pathogenesis. Here we report exome-sequencing analyses of 20,791 individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and 24,440 non-diabetic control participants from 5 ancestries. We identify gene-level associations of rare variants (with minor allele frequencies of less than 0.5%) in 4 genes at exome-wide significance, including a series of more than 30 SLC30A8 alleles that conveys protection against T2D, and in 12 gene sets, including those corresponding to T2D drug targets (P = 6.1 × 10−3) and candidate genes from knockout mice (P = 5.2 × 10−3). Within our study, the strongest T2D gene-level signals for rare variants explain at most 25% of the heritability of the strongest common single-variant signals, and the gene-level effect sizes of the rare variants that we observed in established T2D drug targets will require 75,000–185,000 sequenced cases to achieve exome-wide significance. We propose a method to interpret these modest rare-variant associations and to incorporate these associations into future target or gene prioritization efforts

    STRIDER: Sildenafil therapy in dismal prognosis early-onset intrauterine growth restriction – a protocol for a systematic review with individual participant data and aggregate data meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis

    BACKGROUND: In pregnancies complicated by early-onset extreme fetal growth restriction, there is a high risk of preterm birth and an overall dismal fetal prognosis. Sildenafil has been suggested to improve this prognosis. The first aim of this review is to assess whether sildenafil benefits or harms these babies. The second aim is to analyse if these effects are modified in a clinically meaningful way by factors related to the women or the trial protocol. METHODS/DESIGN: The STRIDER (Sildenafil Therapy In Dismal prognosis Early-onset intrauterine growth Restriction) Individual Participant Data (IPD) Study Group will conduct a prospective IPD and aggregate data systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis. The STRIDER IPD Study Group started trial planning and funding applications in 2012. Three trials will be launched in 2014, recruiting for three years. Further trials are planned to commence in 2015. The primary outcome for babies is being alive at term gestation without evidence of serious adverse neonatal outcome. The latter is defined as severe central nervous system injury (severe intraventricular haemorrhage (grade 3 and 4) or cystic periventricular leukomalacia, demonstrated by ultrasound and/or magnetic resonance imaging) or other severe morbidity (bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity requiring treatment, or necrotising enterocolitis requiring surgery). The secondary outcomes are improved fetal growth velocity assessed by ultrasound abdominal circumference measurements, gestational age and birth weight (centile) at delivery, and age-adequate performance on the two-year Bayley scales of infant and toddler development-III (composite cognitive score and composite motor score). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses in the IPD meta-analysis include assessment of the influence of several patient characteristics: an abnormal or normal serum level of placental growth factor, absent/reversed umbilical arterial end diastolic flow at commencement of treatment, and other patient characteristics available at baseline such as gestational age and estimated fetal weight. The secondary outcomes for mothers include co-incidence and severity of the maternal syndrome of pre-eclampsia, mortality, and other serious adverse events. DISCUSSION: Trials are expected to start in 2013–2014 and end in 2016–2017. Data analyses of individual trials are expected to finish in 2019. Given the pre-planned and agreed IPD protocol, these results should be available in 2020
